Temperature:- A baby cannot hold the thermometer steady enough in the mouth to take correct oral temperature and "fever strips" that are placed on the baby's forehead are not accurate. You can take your baby's temperature by two ways,by taking Rectal temperature or ,by Axilliary temperature. Taking a Rectal temperature:- Considered to be the best and accurate method to take a baby's temperature 1)Use a digital thermomoeter with a cover sheath 2)Keep a diaper under your baby during the procedure ,since stimulation from the thermometer often causes the baby to have a bowel movement 3)Use Vaseline or KY jelly to lubricate the tip of the thermometer. 4)Place the baby belly-down on a firm surface.You can place the baby on your lap also ,whatever is convenient 5)Place the thermometer in the rectum ,about 1.2-3/4 inch and hold it there until the indicator shows the temperature(usually in digital thermometer a sound is produced when it attains the final reading) Taking an Axiliary temperature:- 1)In this procedure ,temperature is taken under the armpit.Use digital thermometer. 2)Place the thermometer securely in the baby'sarmpit. 3)Hold the thermometer in place until the indicator shows the temperature (usually in digital thermometer a sound is produced when it attains the final reading) Remember:- When reporting your baby's temperature to the doctor ,indicate the method you used to take your baby's temperature. Notify your doctor ,if your baby has a temperature over 100 degrees Fahrenheit(38 degrees centigrade) and any of the following occur 1)Unusual fretfulness 2)Listlessness 3)Feeding problems 4)Acting differently Note:-If you think ,the temperature of your baby may be unusually high because your child has been physically active or too warmly clothed,retake the temperature in thirty minutes.
