Cradle cap :-
Cradle cap is a common newborn condition which bothers all the parents especially first time parents.
Cradle cap is a form of Seborrheic Dermatitis, which is often seen in newborn infants.
It is believed to be caused by hormonal changes after birth that stimulate secretions from the sebaceous glands,
which lubricate the hair and skin.
If your baby has cradle cap, it may be a mild case of flaky, dry skin that looks like dandruff, or a more severe case marked by thick, oily, yellow-crusted patches.
Try massaging the scalp of the baby with an oil.Following different oils have been used and tested by Moms for several years:-
Mineral Oil (A main ingredient in baby oils)
Vitamin E oil
Olive oil
Pure aloe vera gel
Vegetable oil
note:-Vaseline has also been used ,but user Moms noted that it was difficult to rinse out and required a lathering or two with gentle shampoo to completely remove from the hair and a lighter oil, such as olive oil, washes out more easily.
Massage baby's scalp gently, either with your fingers, a baby brush, washcloth, fine-toothed comb or soft toothbrush, wash and rinse with warm water. For maintenance, massage and brush your baby's scalp regularly to help stimulate the oil glands and it also improves blood circulation in the head of the baby.
If your infant has developed tough cradle cap in which the flaking has turned into brown thick patches, that can be treated by an anti-seborrheic shampoo . When cradle cap is severe, or spreads over other parts of the body, Consult your pediatrician for the treatment.
Be patient and don't panic .This is shortlived and will go with time and proper care.
