Bathing:-
For a newborn,a complete bath is not necessary everyday.Nevertheless, your baby'sdiaper area should be cleaned everyday and the cord must be cleaned two to four times a day .
Following are the general guidelines for bathing your baby:-
  • Try to bathe your baby before a meal as babies tend to spit up if moved about after the feeding.
  • Avoid Bathing your baby (use sponge bath procedure)until the cord has fallen off.(usually cord falls of between second and fourth week )
  • Always keep all the necessary supplies before starting the bath.
  • bathe yur baby in an area where temperature is maintained (not too hot or cold).
  • Never leave your baby unattended even for a secondin the bathtub.test the temperature of the water first ,before placing your baby in the tub.You can check the temerature with a thermometer meant for this purpose or check the water on the inner side of your wrist ,it should be luke warm or baby may get burns.
  • Always clean from the cleaniest area(eyes) to the dirtiest (genitalia).
  • Powder should not be used as powder shaken over your baby can go into her lungs.
  • Dress your baby in clean clothing after the bath
  • Always use clean and washed, towels ,washcloths and baby's dresses.

    Baby's face and hair :-

  • Always keep your newborn dressed, try not to undress your baby fully as she/he may shiver or feel uncomfortable.Try to wash head or face of the bay first ,while keeping her dressed or wrapped in a towel.
  • Always use moist cotton balls to clean your baby's eyes..Clean the eyes by wiping gently from the inside corner outward using clean water.Use separate cotton balls for each eye.
  • Clean the rest of the face;Remember-to clean under the chin, especially the creases in the neck and wipe dry.
  • Hold the baby in a football hold and wet the hair with cupped hand or wash cloth.
  • Apply a small amount of mild shampoo(choose from any of the baby shampoo brands),rub gently and rinse out shampoo properly so that no shampoo is left on the scalp.Remember-Never put baby's head under the faucet.
  • make sure you dry baby thouroughly to avoid heatloss.

    Sponge bath:-
Wet the baby first using a washcloth.put soap on the hands or washcloth, making sure to cover all areas including creases of the skin.

  • slowly move down the body, cleaning and drying as you move.
  • Turn the baby and wash her/his back area and save the genital area for the last.
  • Rinse well and dry thouroughly your baby.
Note:-Once the cord has fallen off, baby may be bathed in a tub

    Care of the genitalia:-
Wash your baby's genitals last. For girls:-Always clean from the front towards the rectum.Opposite to this can cause urethera infection in baby girls. For boys:-if your baby has been circumcised, place approximately one inch of vaseline on about a four by four inch piece of gauze and smear vaseline over the center of the gauze.Place the lubricated area of gauze directly over circumcision area and then reapply diapers.Repeat this procedure with each diaper change for about four days.It is not necessary to wash the area after the baby urinates.
