Food Allergy:-
If your child has a food allergy ,he/she may get sick when eats certain types of food, like that chewy brownie, some mixed grain cereals etc.
Food allergies can happen to you as wellas your children.
Food allergies occur when immune system of the body mistakenly thinks something that's harmful has been eaten and must suddenly fight to protect the body.
Body's immune system makes antibodies that allow it to fight off bacteria, viruses, and other tiny organisms thus, protecting the body against various diseases.
But sometimes the body, makes antibodies to chemicals or elements in a certain food items that are really not harmful to the body. Researchers are not exactly sure of the reason behind this. If your child have an allergy of any kind, that simply means, child's immune system is simply overreacting to a particular substance, whether it's a kind of medicine (many are allergic to penicillin), pollen in the air (like from mold or grass), or to a food (like eggs or peanuts).
If a child eats a food item that he/she is allergic to, child's body releases chemicals called 'histamines', which make him/her feel sick - sometimes very sick.
Many Children outgrow allergies to milk, tomatoes, and eggs as they grow older. But severe allergies to foods like peanuts, certain kinds of fish, and shrimp often stay with someone for most of his/her life.
When a child is allergic to a particular food, you can know about it soon after ,he/she eats it. Most children get raised itchy, red welts on the body(known as hives), Other symptoms include stomach cramps, diarrhea, or patches of dry, itchy, bumpy or scaly rashes called eczema on parts of the body like the elbows and knees.
In addition to this, some children can have serious bad allergic reactions leading to swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat, vomiting, and sudden difficulty in breathing. If these symptoms are seen, that means suffering child can quickly get very sick and can go into something called 'anaphylaxis'. When this happens, the child has trouble breathing properly, his blood pressure and heart rate may drop, and he could pass out. A bad allergic reaction needs emergency medical attention and treatment right away!
Food allergies can be dangerous and can be severe enough to bring on anaphylaxis.
Researchers believe that food allergies could be genetic, which means if you or other close relative has certain allergies like hay fever, you're more likely to pass on the same allergies to your children. Some may be born allergic to certain foods whereas others develop food allergies over time. This may be due to someone's surroundings or changes in the body as they grow older.
Note:-
Many people react to a certain food item but are not actually allergic. For example, people with lactose intolerance get belly pain and diarrhea from milk and other dairy products, but that really has nothing to do with an actual food allergy - it's just that their bodies can't properly break down the sugars found in milk. Test for food allergy:-
A skin test is done that helps figure out what kind of food allergy your child have, once child's doctor suspects to have a food allergy. Drops of chemicals that are found in different foods on your skin and check to see if child develops an allergic reaction to them. If child is allergic, his/her skin will develop a red bump or itchy hives. The doctor may also do other blood tests that might show allergy to certain food items.
Depending upon the test reults ,Doctor may instruct you to keep your child steer clear of them. An antihistamine medicine can also be prescribed which works to treat mild food allergy symptoms, like itching and hives.
For severe allergy, the doctor may prescribe a medicine called 'epinephrine' which is only taken when an allergic reaction - with symptoms like mouth swelling and difficulty breathing - becomes a medical emergency. This form of epinephrine is called an EpiPen, is given as an injection (shot), and comes in a form that looks like a ball-point pen that can be easily carried with at all times. Taking precautions:- Try to make your child memorize all the words related to the food he/she is allergic to (like peanut oil, peanuts, and peanut butter) and always read food labels before you give a certain food to your child. Do NOT give a food item,if the label is listed with allergic ingredients . Do NOT take a risk,if there is no label on a food item. This is especially important when your child has bad allergic reactions.
Always ask ,if you're at a restaurant or a friend's house for dinner.Teach your child that just because a food looks or sounds safe doesn't mean it is.Children, when go out wihtout you or on their own, should know about the food items they are allergic to.
